For a time it seemed likely that the Suevi, in spite Of their late crushing defeat, would subject to themselves the whole of Spain, but under Theodoric II. And Euric, the Visigoths definitely asserted their superiority. Under the latter king the Gothic domination in Spain may be said to have begun about ten years before the fall Of the Western Empire. But the Goths were as yet by no means in possession of the whole of Spain. A large part Of the south was held by imperialist troops; for, though the Western Empire had been extinguished in 476, the Eastern emperor had succeeded by inheritance to all the outlying provinces, which had even nominally belonged to his rival in the West. Among these was some portion Of Spain.

An enlightening and interesting look into a little known period and place of history. I was particularly struck by the stories of Christians provoking martyrdom to the frustration and consternation of their Muslim rulers. Interesting reversal there. I also noticed much discussion of different heresies that only hinted at a rich backstory there. Indirectly explains how Christianity took its modern form in the Middle East, such as the Coptics. Only three stars due too much of the material particularly footnotes written in Latin, Greek, or other languages with no translation which took away from my understanding and learning from the material of the book. Understand that this book was written years ago and geared to an academic audience that presumably would be conversant in those languages. I wished that a modern version included translations as us modern readers have fallen far from the polyglot scholars and literate masses of old.

Great history I never learned in school. I did not realize that the Moors were in Spain until around 1492.
This book talks about the differences between Christianity and Islam in Spain, A.D. 756-1031. I think this books is structured to give you a understanding of the differences and simularities between the religion. It's a free book and well written book.
The book offers a broad Protestant Britisher's overview of the history and interplay of Christianity and Islam in Spain during the period in question. Written, I assume, in the mid-to-late 1800s, the scholarship and prose reflect practices of that era. Though amply footnoted, sources could be difficult to track, as information about publishers or locations of unique documents are incomplete by today's standards. Pagination on my was awkward - footnotes often appeared mid-page on my display, so text was frequently interrupted. Nonetheless, I found the reading experience helpful and informative.
I grabbed this book because it was free, when the news reported that it had been in Osama bin Laden's collection, out of idle curiosity. Given the book's age, and my relative ignorance on the topic, I can't comment on whether the arguments and conclusions are correct or even still the general consensus of historians. Furthermore, the author betrays a clear anti-Roman-Catholic bias, but that is probably typical for a Protestant Englishman of the time this was written. Still, even with all these caveats, and the fact that it was dry reading at some points, I did learn some interesting things, and was driven to seek out more information on certain topics.
